On Saturday, October 24, 12 Brother Knights from Family of Man Council #7566 grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and served dinner to residents, walk-in guests, and staff at the Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter in Reston, VA.

Under Brother Eddie Byrne’s leadership, the team brought a large grill from Saint John Neumann Catholic Church (SJN) to the shelter and set it up in the rear parking area. After preparing the charcoal, the Knights cooked 160 hamburgers and 100 hot dogs, each served on a bun. Several team members served the meal with drinks and side dishes prepared by shelter staff. After dinner, the group let the grill cool, cleaned the cooking area, and returned the grill and supplies to SJN.

Special thanks to DGK Roberto Ortuno, who helped with the cooking and used his truck to transport the grill and supplies to and from the shelter. Other Brother Knights who helped make the cookout a success included PGKs Kevin McManus and Bill McInerney, Tom Barbaro, Louis Wise, Phil Coyle, Mike Poland, Al Zane, Joe Cella, Rich McDonough, Tom Olszewski, and Steve Mortensen.

Thank you to all the volunteers for their dedication to the council’s community-service mission and for helping to provide a welcoming meal for our neighbors.
